The Subic Freeport Zone or Former Subic Naval Base, was once the largest US Navy support station in East Asia and an important forward position in the region. After Philippine Independence in 1946, the Americans maintained Subic Base because of its strategic location, until it was finally dismantled in 1992 and turned into a Freeport. It is approximately 18,000 hectares and is enclosed in its northern  and southern boundaries by fences erected by the U.S. Navy and contains SBMA's offices, duty free shops, hotels, seaports, airports, recreational facilities and residential facilities.

The strategic location of Subic Bay Freeport Zone offers versatile gateways. Either by land, by air or by sea, the Freeport is conveniently accessible to anyone.

By Land, Subic is easily accessed through a system of well-paved roads that hugs the coast, linking the province to Manila via Gapan-Olongapo highway, and western Pangasinan. Limited access roads run from the coast into the eastern mountains. Several bus companies provide daily commuter service from various points in the provinve to Manila and back. In Manila, Saulog Transit and Victory Liner air conditioned buses provide passenger regular transport services to and from Olongapo City terminal..

By Air, the Subic Bay International Airport has regular direct international scheduled and chartered flights. Far Eastern Transport provides international scheduled and chartered flights to Taipei and Kaohsiung Taiwan on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The carriers using the Subic International Airport includes Inter-island Airlines, which offers chartered flights to and from Taiwan, Mandarin Air with flights to and from Taiwan, Cebu Pacific Air with flights to and from Incheon in South Korea and Air Philippines with flights to and from Hong Kong.

By Sea, a relaxing ferry trip via Mt. Samat Express leaves Manila from the Philippine Cultural Center on Roxas Boulevard and to the port of Orion in the province of Bataan. From the port, buses ply to Subic Bay. However, buses from the port to Subic Bay should be arranged with the designated officer at the front desk of the ferry terminal.
